Pohyache Peeth (पोह्याचं पीठ) – Flattened Rice Porridge

This is a traditional snack from Konkan. My Grandmother used to make this for us. Those days, Poha (Flattened Rice) flour was always available in the kitchen. Add hot Milk, Jaggery and a pinch of salt to Poha Flour and the healthy breakfast is ready. As easy as having corn flakes but far more healthy than Corn flakes. And of course – natural food as against processed corn flakes. It is much more tasty than tasteless Oats. It’s quite filling. Suitable for all age groups. Only Diabetic patients should avoid it as it contains Jaggery (They can mix Flattened Rice flour with mild sour buttermilk and add Salt, roasted cumin powder for taste.) . Not sure why this is not known to most people now-a-days. But my Son and I like it very much.

The process of making Poha flour is also easy. Dry roast Poha till crispy; wait for it to come to room temperature. Then Grind it into a fine powder. You can make this flour and keep in air-tight container. Consistency of this Porridge is as per one’s taste. If you like it like Sheera / Halwa – add less milk. If you like it like Kheer, add more milk. In this, you can’t replace Jaggery with Sugar. It does not taste good. Also remember, Poha Flour puffs up when you add hot milk. So to start with just take 2 teaspoon of flour and mix it with milk and Jaggery. If you take more, it will be difficult to finish.

Ingredients (Serves 1)

Poha (Flattened Rice) Flour 2 teaspoon

Milk 1 – 1.5 cups

Crushed Jaggery / Jaggery Powder as per taste

Salt ½ pinch

Dry Fruits as desired

Instructions

1. In a bowl, add Poha Flour and Jaggery.

2. Add Hot milk slowly and keep mixing. Add milk to get the desired consistency of porridge.

3. Add Salt and mix.

4. Garnish with dry fruits and enjoy while it’s hot.

Tip

1. You can give this porridge to Toddlers also. Make it of Porridge consistency by adding more milk and Don’t add dry fruits.

2. Instead of Poha Flour, you can use flour of Puffed Sorgham, Puffed Amarath and Puffed Rice.

  1. Hello,

While young we used to say khayche pith for a flour made by roasting varichan tandul and it used to be so khamang and tasty and found in Konkan side. I guess they wash, roast and they hand grind on the stone grinders. We ate it with milk and sugar or jaggery. It was very healthy and filling. It also looked a bit yellowing and not white due to being roasted.
