Some dishes have unusual names and mostly there is some background for calling these dishes by these names. This chutney is one of them. I don’t know the real name of this Chutney. My husband’s maternal Aunty – Taramavshi (Mavshi is Aunty in our language) – makes this Chutney and she calls it ‘Chutney’. When I first visited her after my marriage, she had served this chutney to me. I liked it very much so she packed some for me. Thereon whenever I visit Taramavshi, I get a packet of this Chutney. I asked Taramavshi for the recipe but she could not tell me proper recipe as she uses her gut feel to add the ingredients and does not measure them. Neither could I watch her making this Chutney. However she had told me – she adds some coriander seeds in the chutney. I could identify some other ingredients – dry coconut, peanuts, sesame seeds from the taste. So I decided to make this by myself guessing the ingredients by remembering the taste. After a couple of tries, I got the taste of the Chutney similar to what she makes. Since there is no other name to this chutney, we call it Taramavshichi Chutney. This is a family favorite now. This is a dry chutney that lasts for 3-4 weeks.
